Friday Fun Food Fact: Cinnamon!

As Autumn marches towards Winter, cinnamon is cropping up everywhere. And rightly so, since it is an incredibly warming spice and a great choice as the weather turns colder!  But beyond it’s warming effects, cinnamon has a ton of health benefits.

First of all, cinnamon helps control blood sugar.  This makes it the perfect condiment for a hot chocolate or latte.

Secondly, it reduces LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, thus being supportive of cardiovascular health.  (LDL is often called “bad” cholesterol as it contributes to atherosclerosis).

Additionally, cinnamon is a powerful anti-oxidant.  It neutralizes free radicals throughout the body thereby supporting numerous physiological systems.

On the immune front, its’ potent anti-microbial properties make it an effective immune support against viruses, bacteria and fungi, including candida, cold/flu viruses, E. coli,  Salmonella and H. pylori.

Cinnamon is also supportive of cognitive function as it improves alertness, memory and concentration.  Its’ warming properties make it very helpful in relaxing tight ‘study’ muscles.  Clearly, a little bottle of cinnamon essential oil is the perfect student’s aid!
