Meet Susan Furtado

 MCP, RCC, CCC, R.H.N.

  Psychotherapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor, Psycho-Nutra-Therapist™

Often there is a direct correlation between mood, emotional disorders and poor nutrition. As such, Susan employs an exclusively unique approach in her practice, blending the worlds of traditional psychotherapy with corrective nutritional implementation.  This extraordinarily effective approach is called Psycho-Nutra-Therapy (PNT)™.

Psycho-Nutra-Therapy™ is a comprehensive approach to mind-body wellness that goes far beyond the traditional propensity to treat symptoms only. The aim is to find the root cause.  Careful attention is given to symptomatology from a bodily and physiological perspective, thoroughly investigating any potential nutritional deficiencies.  Susan’s thorough processes produce a high degree of accuracy regarding vitamin, mineral and general nutritional deficiencies.  Upon assessment, Susan implements an integrative treatment plan and lifestyle program unique to each client, emphasizing specific dietary and supplemental support in conjunction with person-centred, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Susan’s natural inclination towards compassion and empathy are her key assets and the cornerstone of her non-judgemental style. She creates a safe, trusting and comfortable environment for her clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, memories and behaviours.  Openly engaging and encouraging new insights through self – exploration, Susan helps to foster a deeper understanding and acceptance of difficult experiences.  Through emotional support and specific therapeutic interventions tailored to the individual, her clients are steered towards optimum physical and mental well being.

Susan brings a limitless energy to the task of supporting her clients in achieving their goals – whether it be maintaining better mental health, or a much improved quality of life.

At Doctors’ Choice Naturopathic Clinic, counselling sessions are conducted in the following way:

Free Initial Visit: 20 minutes

Your initial visit is a free 20 minute consultation.  This provides you the opportunity to meet with Susan and determine whether the working relationship will be a ‘good fit’ for you.  At Doctors’ Choice Naturopathic Clinic, we greatly value the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and client.  It is our intention that you be as comfortable and confident as possible in your treatment decision before stepping into the clinical space.

During this time,  you will have the floor to ask any questions you may have about therapy, Psycho-Nutra-Therapy™ or the therapeutic process in general.

We understand that taking on counselling is a major decision and that you may have many questions about the process.  We will do our best to answer them.  Our mission at Doctors’ Choice Naturopathic is simple: to transform your health.  It is our goal that you leave our clinic feeling better than when you arrived, every single time.

First Counselling Session: 50 minutes

Your first counselling session is typically 50 minutes.  Please arrive 15 minutes early to fill out the necessary intake forms.  Alternatively, you may download them and fill them out ahead of time.

During your first session, Susan will work with you to identify your concerns and understand how they are impacting your life.  Through an assessment of your needs and your strengths, she will help you to establish and prioritize your goals moving forward.  She will provide you with worksheets and / or resources to support your therapeutic work together, as well as important information on nutritional supplementation and testing that may be recommended.

Followup Counselling Sessions: 50 minutes

Followup sessions are typically 50 minutes and may include the following: a general check-in, discussion of any progress or setbacks you may have experienced, as well as a review of any therapeutic interventions or nutritional supplementation previously prescribed.  Based upon your presenting concern and the topic of your exploration together, Susan will suggest a variety of therapeutic tools to deepen your discussion, promote your discovery of insights and support the emotional acceptance of these.

You may choose to meet weekly, bi-weekly or monthly depending upon your needs and availability.  The total duration of therapy is unique to the individual.  It can range from as few as 8 sessions to a year or more depending upon your goals and your progress.
