With the sun sticking around a bit, it’s pretty enticing to get out there and soak up those rays! But with all the scares of skin cancer, how can you do it in a healthier way? Is it possible to protect your skin from damage through the foods that you eat??? Can you EAT YOUR SUNSCREEN??? Well, you can! And here’s the ticket: Antioxidants!
Edible sunscreen with Antioxidants
Antioxidants soak up free radicals that are formed when we’re exposed to too much sun. Free Radicals damage your cells, your DNA and your collagen. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and prevent this damage from occurring. The more time you spend in the sun (with or without sunscreen), the more antioxidants you use up. Applying sunscreen topically is pretty standard practice for most sun worshippers, but why not eat it as well?
- Eat berries. It’s berry season here in BC so this should be an easy one. Switch out your go to apples, oranges and bananas for blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or blackberries. Fruits and vegetables in general have high antioxidant levels but berries are tops.
- Add antioxidant-rich spices to your cooking. Cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger all are high in antioxidants and make dishes tastier too.
- Drink Green Tea. Switching out your regular morning beverage for green tea is a quick way to increase your daily intake of antioxidants. Green tea is also an excellent sunburn remedy when applied topically. Make a strong tea and add it to a tepid bath: this helps a sunburn heal faster.
